Golden Residence Program
The Portuguese Government released in October 2012 regulations on “The residence permit for foreign investors”.
The holders of a Golden Residence Permit for Investment Activity have a right to apply for a permanent residence permit according to the current legal law.
The Golden Visa Programme offers 3 investment opportunities
1. Purchase of real estate with a value equal to or above 500.000 Euro. Possibility of co-ownership with an investment of 500.000 Euro total value for each co-owner. The property can be rented without restrictions for tourism, commercial or agricultural purposes
2. Capital transfer with a value equal to or above 1 million Euro into a Portuguese bank account, the acquisition of stocks or shares of all types of companies.
3. Creation of, at least, 10 job positions of residents in Portugal with registration of these employees in the Social Security.
Under the terms of the Golden Residence Permit Programme (ARI) the investment must be done for a minimum period of 5 years with periods of mandatory stay (per year) in Portugal for Golden Visa holders:
– First year – 7 days
– Subsequent two years – 14 days
Golden Visa application can be submitted personally by an investor or via a legal representative

3. At the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) in Portugal
The documents for applying for the Golden Visa
The investor needs to provide the following documents for applying for the Golden Visa:
- Passport with valid Schengen visa
- Criminal report from the country of residency
- Proof of investment
- Proof of health insurance
- Declaration from the Tax Departmen, proving the absence of debts to the Tax Department and the Social Security.
Golden Visa holders can apply for Portuguese citizenship after 6 years of legal residency in Portugal.
The members of the investor’s family also can apply for a residence through family reunification.
Golden Visa holders are allowed to enter and travel freely within all the countries of the Schengen zone.
Since the Programme was lunched in October 2012 the Portuguese authorities have issued a total of 2420 Residence permits according to the data of Ministry of Foreign Affairs from October the 8th to the 30th of June 2015.
